BMF Wraps Up Tyre Safety Month with a Call to Keep the Checks Rolling

As October’s Tyre Safety Month draws to a close, the British Motorcyclists Federation (BMF) is reminding riders that tyre safety is an all-year priority NOT just for one campaign month.

Throughout October, the BMF has proudly supported TyreSafe’s 2025 “Under Pressure” campaign, highlighting the essential role tyres play in motorcycle safety, especially as the seasons shift and road conditions become more unpredictable.

Across BMF’s Social Media channels this month, riders have been reminded that tyres are their only contact with the road. Posts have focused on the essentials: tread depth, pressure, age, and visible damage. With autumn’s damp surfaces and falling leaves, the message remains clear –tyre checks aren’t optional; they’re critical.

One key reminder has been the importance of tread wear indicators, built into most motorcycle tyres. These small, raised bars show when tread depth is nearing the legal limit. Once the tread reaches these markers, replacement is necessary to maintain grip and safety.

We have also highlighted the risks of underinflated tyres, which can cause poor handling, increased wear and even blowouts. Riders are encouraged to check tyre pressures regularly using home gauges or service station tools and to follow manufacturer guidelines for the correct PSI.

Beyond wear and pressure, the Federation continues to raise awareness around tyre age and condition. Tyres degrade over time -even if they appear fine. Riders are urged to read the DOT code to determine tyre age, with five years suggested as a point for closer inspection. Cracks, sidewall damage and embedded debris are also signs that a tyre may no longer be roadworthy.

In line with TyreSafe’s “Safe and Save” theme, the BMF reinforces that good tyre maintenance isn’t just about safety – it’s also about saving money. Properly maintained tyres last longer, improve fuel efficiency and reduce the risk of costly repairs or accidents.

As Tyre Safety Month concludes, the BMF is calling on all riders to keep the checks rolling. Tyre checks should be part of every pre-ride routine, not just a seasonal habit. With winter approaching and conditions becoming more challenging, vigilance on the road matters more than ever.
