New Year, New Roads: Riding Responsibly Through Winter Conditions

As we begin a new year, many parts of the UK are experiencing true winter conditions, from light snow flurries to extreme snowfall and icy roads. While January often sees fewer motorcycles on the road, riders are very much still out there and winter conditions bring increased risks for everyone.

For motorcyclists, snow, ice, slush and grit can dramatically reduce grip, visibility and reaction time. Even roads that appear clear can hide frozen patches, particularly on shaded lanes, bridges and higher ground. For drivers, spotting motorcycles in poor weather can be more challenging, making awareness and patience more important than ever.

A shared responsibility

Motorcycle safety is not just about the rider; it’s about how all road users behave. Taking an extra moment to look twice at junctions, allowing more space when overtaking, and being aware that motorcycles may need to position themselves differently in winter conditions can help prevent collisions.

Advice for riders

Only ride if conditions are suitable for you and your machine

Reduce speed and avoid sudden braking or sharp inputs

Watch for ice on untreated roads, bridges and rural routes

Increase following distances and stay visible

If conditions are unsafe, there’s no shame in choosing not to ride

Advice for drivers

Expect motorcycles all year round – not just in summer

Look carefully at junctions and when pulling out

Give riders extra room, especially on narrow or slippery roads

Remember that motorcycles are more affected by poor surfaces

At the British Motorcyclists Federation, we continue to represent riders all year round – promoting safer roads, rider awareness and mutual respect between all road users.

As 2026 gets underway, let’s make it a year of responsibility, patience and shared road safety.

Ride safe. Ride free. Look out for one another.
