Staffordshire Police Use Bikes to Combat Thefts Other news 12 January 202513 January 2025 Staffordshire Police have been fighting bike theft by equipping specially trained officers with drones and Honda CRF300L off-road bikes – and the new strategy is working. Operation Transom, put into action on Sunday 15th December, saw officers from three Staffordshire units – Park Hall Country Park, Werrington and Bucknall – target areas where anti-social riding had been reported. Inspector Becci Price said: “On many occasions the actions of those involved have not only been anti-social but also reckless and criminal. Riders risk injuring themselves, other road users and pedestrians. They will be dealt with accordingly through disqualification, arrest and prosecution.” Operation Transom worked by using the CRF-mounted officers as deterrent patrols and a drone for additional information. Two stolen bikes were located and recovered while the drone reported seven traffic offences. Jim Freeman, chair at the BMF welcomed the use of officers ‘in the field’ (sometimes literally) to track down stolen bikes and deter anti-social riding. “Great to see that police resources are being focused in this way, the biggest boon to criminals has been the attitude that bike and other vehicle theft has been basically about property and insurance, not about social issues. It doesn’t stop there, the tidal wave of electric bicycle related crime is also being addressed, the urban street criminal’s choice of transport has been stolen mopeds and twist n go 125s, now they favour e bicycles and Sur- Rons. ” Written by Peter Henshaw Top image courtesy of Staffordshire Police Share on Facebook Share Share on TwitterTweet Share on Pinterest Share Share on LinkedIn Share Share on Digg Share
