Tyre Safety Month – Small Checks – Big Difference BMF News 21 October 202521 October 2025 🛞 Tyre Safety Month (1st – 31st October) Small Checks – Big Difference As part of Tyre Safety Month, the British Motorcyclists Federation (BMF) is joining forces with TyreSafe to help remind riders that a few simple tyre checks can make a huge difference to safety, performance and enjoyment out on the road. Throughout October we’re encouraging all motorcyclists to take a moment to inspect their tyres, because the right pressure, tread and condition could be what keeps you upright this season. ________________________________________ Why Motorcycle Tyres Matter Your tyres are the only part of your motorcycle that actually touch the road. Every aspect of riding, acceleration, braking, steering and cornering depends on this small contact patch. Keeping tyres in top condition isn’t just about performance, it’s about safety. With regular checks, correct pressures and proper maintenance, your tyres will deliver the best possible grip, handling and comfort, helping you get the most from every ride safely and without unnecessary cost. ________________________________________ TyreSafe FAQs – Motorcycle Tyre Safety TyreSafe have highlight some of the most common tyre-related questions to help riders understand what’s going on beneath them. All information below is taken from the official TyreSafe web page: 🔗 TyreSafe – Motorbike Tyre Safety ________________________________________ 1️⃣ What is tyre cracking? Tyre cracking happens when the rubber becomes hard, brittle and begins to break down. This usually affects older tyres or bikes that haven’t been ridden for some time, especially those kept in cool, damp or uncovered storage. Both under-inflated and over-inflated tyres are more likely to crack. Under-inflation generates extra friction and heat, while over-inflation stretches the rubber beyond its intended limit. Environmental factors such as extreme temperatures and prolonged wet conditions also speed up the process. Regular inspection and correct tyre pressures are key to preventing cracking and ensuring safe riding. ________________________________________ 2️⃣ How should you ride a motorcycle when new tyres have just been fitted? New tyres need a short ‘running-in’ period to remove the thin, slippery film left from the manufacturing process. For roughly the first 100 miles, take it easy by riding more slowly, avoiding heavy braking and to keep your lean angles and acceleration gentle. This allows the surface of the tyres to bed in properly, helping them deliver full grip and performance. ________________________________________ 3️⃣ How do I avoid “squaring-off” my tyres? If you spend a lot of time on motorways or straight roads your tyres can start to ‘square-off’, where the transition between the tread and sidewall flattens out. This can lead to a loss of grip and unusual handling when you later switch to twisty roads. The shape and compound of your tyres play a part too as some start with a flatter profile than others. Tyre pressures are equally important; both under- and over-inflation can increase the rate of squaring. While squaring-off can’t be avoided entirely, mixing in more winding routes, maintaining correct pressures and staying alert to changes in handling will help reduce the effect and extend tyre life. ________________________________________ 4️⃣ Can you mix motorcycle tyres? Mixing tyres of different construction types (for example, radial with cross-ply) is unsafe and in some cases illegal. To maintain the best stability, grip and handling, it’s generally recommended that both tyres come from the same manufacturer and construction type. If you’re unsure, always check with a qualified tyre specialist before fitting. ________________________________________ Stay Safe, Stay Inflated Tyres are one of the most overlooked safety components on a motorcycle. Regular checks for tread depth, cracking and correct pressures can prevent costly repairs and serious incidents.
